Lines of Expression - Exhibition by Judit Kurtág

In Lines of Expression, Judit Kurtág presents a selection of figures and other ink drawings in which the line becomes both subject and language. Reduced to a few essential gestures, her marks seem to hover between figure and abstraction, movement and stillness, presence and disappearance.

Born in Budapest, raised in France, and having lived in Amsterdam and Berlin before settling in Geneva, Kurtág has developed a multifaceted artistic practice spanning photography, video, text, drawing and painting. Across these different media, her work explores perception, the invisible and the unspeakable, as well as memory, disorientation and the shifting relationships between time and space.

The drawings in this exhibition reveal another dimension of this ongoing exploration. Their minimal gestures carry a surprising sense of sensuality and poetry. Lines suggest bodies, movements and imaginary creatures, yet resist fixed interpretation. They emerge as fragments of a visual language—at once intimate and enigmatic—inviting the viewer to move between recognition and uncertainty.

Kurtág describes the essence of her work as a variation on the appearance of what she calls “choreographic matter.” In these ink drawings, the line itself becomes choreographic: it moves, hesitates, stretches, folds and transforms. Each gesture traces not only a form, but also a moment, a rhythm and a space for imagination.

Lines of Expression invites us to encounter drawing as an act of perception—a place where language gives way to gesture, and where the simplest mark can open onto a complex and poetic world.
