Africa attracted $8B in renewable energy investments in 2022, 28GW of solar power capacity was reached in 2022, with an additional 13GW expected by 2025, and hydropower accounts for over 60% of the continent's total renewable capacity.

As of 2023, over 40 African cities have committed to developing green urban development plans; several African cities are investing in electric bus fleets and promoting electric vehicle adoption, and investments in green infrastructure projects are rising across Africa.


  • Ethanol: Africa produced 6.5B liters in 2022; top producers: South Africa, Kenya, Angola.
  • Biodiesel: Africa produced 200M litres in 2022; the top producers were Nigeria and Tanzania.
  • Natural gas: Africa consumed 230B cubic meters in 2022; top consumers: Mozambique, Egypt, Algeria.
  • Hydrogen: Namibia and South Africa are collaborating on a green hydrogen project that could produce up to 10 GW of clean energy.
