Make Memory Move II (A Monument for The Washer Women)

Make Memory Move II (A Monument for The Washer Women)

Overview

A performance work in progress that honors the legacy of the washer women who started the strike in 1881.

In 1881, just after the Civil War, Black women had been legally freed, but the washerwomen of Atlanta were barely surviving on the wages they earned. Fed up with their pay, they organized and started in a church, launching what would become the Atlanta Washerwomen's Strike.

Their names were Matilda Crawford, Sallie Bell, Carrie Jones, Dora Jones, Ophelia Turner, and Sarah A. Collier. To this day, there are no monuments honoring their labor or legacy anywhere in public space.

This performance is an attempt to reconcile that lapse.

Join us for a work-in-progress showing, ahead of the final performance's debut at an outdoor space in Atlanta on May 1, 2027. The durational performance runs 3 hours total, in 1-hour intervals.

ABOUT US

LandMarked: Making Memory Move, founded by artist Ada Pinkston, is committed to uplifting and preserving the rich legacies of Black communities by creating powerful public art experiences that center collective memory, community truth-telling, and historical restoration. We believe that honoring Black history is not a backward-looking act, but a vital process of affirming the present realities, resilience, and brilliance of Black people today. Through performance, storytelling, and site-specific interventions, we make space for healing, recognition, and visibility in landscapes where Black narratives have too often been erased or ignored.
