What does it mean to “audit” the class?

Auditing allows you to observe the workshop without actively participating in every exercise or performance activity. It’s a great option for newer improvisers, introverts, directors, writers, coaches, or anyone curious about the material.

1. Do I need to be a good singer?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely not! Musical improv is about improvisation first. You don’t need a trained voice, a big range, or perfect pitch. If you can make a sound and commit to it, you can do musical improv. In fact, learning to let go of worrying about how you sound is part of the fun.

Do I need previous musical improv experience?

No. This drop-in is designed to be accessible to people trying musical improv for the first time while still giving experienced improvisers plenty to play with. We’ll work with simple, practical techniques you can start using immediately.

Do I need previous improv experience?

Some basic improv experience is recommended. You don’t need to be an expert, but familiarity with concepts like Yes, And, listening, character, and scene work will help you get the most out of the class.

What if I freeze up and can't think of a rhyme or lyric?

Accepted Answer

Perfect — that’s one of the things we’ll work on! Musical improv gets much easier when you stop searching for the “right” lyric. You’ll learn techniques using repetition, patterns, emotion, character, and your scene partner so you don't have to invent everything from scratch.

5. Will I have to sing by myself?

There may be opportunities to sing solo, but you won't be thrown into the deep end without support. We’ll build toward it through group exercises, games, and partner work. The goal is to make taking that leap feel fun rather than terrifying.

We’ll warm up your musical improv muscles, explore techniques for creating songs spontaneously, and put those skills into action through exercises and musical improv games. Expect to spend much more time doing than sitting and talking about it.
