Haji Noor Deen: Postcards to the Beloved Community

This experience invites participants to study Sini calligraphy script under the masterful stewardship of world-renowned artist, scholar, and professor, Haji Noor Deen. Reflecting on IMAN’s vision of a Beloved Community, this workshop offers the ink and brush as a tool for sacred storytelling which becomes an act of powerful advocacy in the face of cultural erosion, family separation, and spiritual adversity. Each participant is guided to craft a postcard dedicated to the voice of communities under fire, and is invited to contribute it to a public installation honoring the 60th anniversary of the Chicago Freedom Movement as a testament of collective memory and art as documentation and witnessing. About Haji Noor Deen Mi Guang Jiang
Haji Noor Deen is a renowned master of Arabic calligraphy. Born in 1963 in Shandong province, China, he brings an immense learning in traditional thought and Islamic art to a modern audience, juxtaposing them in a new calligraphic style all his own, both Eastern and Western.  His work has been displayed often as the first Chinese/Arabic artist, and has been acquired for permanent collections, such as The British Museum, San Francisco Asian Museum, National Museum of Scotland and Harvard University Art Museum.
