About the Seminar

Do investors prefer low-priced stocks simply because of the price label?

This seminar examines how investors' preference for low-priced stocks affects both individual investor welfare and market quality. Drawing on staggered reverse splits and account-level trading records, the study finds that retail investors significantly reduce their trading in stocks once they move out of the low-price tier, instead shifting their activity toward other low-priced stocks.

The findings reveal a striking tension: while the preference for low-priced stocks is costly for individual investors, the presence of these investors can provide broader benefits to markets by supporting liquidity, price discovery, and valuations.
