The Alex Lucero Band has opened for Michael McDonald, Chaka Khan and Pablo Cruise, and Lookout Santa Cruz hears in Alex's voice a touch of Al Green and a shade of Van Morrison. Raised in Oakdale in the Central Valley and now based in Santa Cruz, Lucero trained in musical theater as a teen before soul took over, and he has since released a run of independent albums, including Dotted Line and Opportunity, with wife Justina Lucero holding down bass.
When the pandemic shut the clubs, the band livestreamed sets from empty Santa Cruz County rooms and played relief shows for CZU fire families, then took the songs national on a 2025 tour behind the single Long As You Like. They call it country soul, and it lands somewhere between Al Green and Americana. Two early Sunday sets, one intimate room. Grab a table early.
