Join us for a walk to find migratory birds and other wildlife at Detroit's newest park and 6th largest park.
Rogell: A brief history.
The 98 acre property originally featured a 9-hole course designed by famed Scottish-American architect Tom Bendelow. When the City of Redford took ownership, they hired legendary golf course architect Donald Ross to redesign and expand it into a premier 18-hole course. Ross took extensive advantage of the natural elevation changes created by the winding tributaries of the Rouge River.
"Rogell is a new 98-acre park, formally known as the Rogell Golf Course. The initial vision for Rogell was established during the Grand River Northwest Neighborhood Framework Plan adopted in 2018. During that community engagement process, the redevelopment of the former golf course into a public park arose as a priority. Special focus groups were formed for the Rogell Park Master Plan also adopted in 2018. The result is a concept defining Rogell Park as one of Detroit’s signature passive-recreation destinations; immersing Detroiters into nature through trails, wetlands, and meadows."
The natural elevation changes created by the winding tributaries of the Rouge River and the many years the property has spent mostly undisturbed by humans has made this an amazing spot for birds and other wildlife. We will walk a loop, partially paved and partially a dirt path, (less than one mile) listening and looking for birds. We'll discuss behavior, field marks, fun facts and identification tips for all the birds we see.
Bathroom facilities are not available. A large parking lot is available on Berg Road. Bring your binoculars.
