CUENTOS: Every Altar Begins With A Story

CUENTOS: Every Altar Begins with a Story is a contemporary theatrical dance production inspired by Día de los Muertos and the stories we carry with us.

Through movement, music, and poetry, an altar and its cuentos come alive. La Catrina, our Keeper of Stories, invites us into a world where memories are revived and stories are told. Alongside her are El Catrín, the Keeper of Celebration, the Alebrije, our spirit guide, and the Calacas, who bring each cuento to life.

CUENTOS takes us on a journey of love, family, resilience, joy, grief, forgiveness, and strength. It celebrates those who came before us, gives space to stories that must be told, and honors the memories that connect us across generations.

At its heart, CUENTOS reminds us that an altar is more than what we see. Behind every photograph, flower, candle, and offering is a life, a memory, and a story waiting to be remembered.

Every altar begins with a story.

About Colibri Dance Theatre

Colibrí Dance Theatre is a home for movement, memory, and meaningful storytelling. We are a multifaceted dance company rooted in spirit and the quiet power of the body in motion.

Inspired by the hummingbird—a symbol of resilience, healing, joy, and freedom—we create dances that live between breath and memory. Our work is swift but intentional—hovering just long enough to stir something within you.

We craft dances that reflect untold stories and amplify voices too often left unheard. Our work blends grounded technique with a touch of magical realism, honoring the many identities and lineages within our company. It is this rich diversity that shapes our collective voice.

Every movement holds a memory of where we’ve been and opens the door to what’s possible. Each dance is a prayer—an act of remembering and a gentle beginning.

We don’t speak for those who came before us. We dance with them—so their stories can be felt, and their voices remembered.
