Planting Day at: Newtown Creek Nature Walk!
Join Newtown Creek Alliance for a stewardship and planting event at one of our favorite waterfront parks in Greenpoint!
Newtown Creek Alliance and DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) invites you to join us at Newtown Creek Nature Walk Phase 3 for a clean up + planting volunteer event! This is a perfect opportunity to connect with DEP's community coordinators with any questions you may have for caring of Rain Gardens in your neighborhood.
Although the Newtown Creek Nature Walk is not a Rain Garden, NCA and DEP invite community members to help us restore our nature walk of aggressive plant material and revitalize our shared greenspace with 400 native perennials. Whether you’re an experienced gardener, planting for the first time, or simply looking for a meaningful way to contribute to support our pollinators and create a biodiverse habitat, everyone is welcome. Every person and every plant makes a difference in enhancing our greenspaces! Lend a hand in creating a healthier, more resilient New York City. This is a great opportunity to learn about native plants, connect with neighbors, and take part in meaningful, community-based environmental stewardship.
The Nature Walk waterfront marks a milestone in the community to access our long neglected Newtown Creek. The first phase was finished in 2007; the second and third phases were opened in 2021. Upgrades to the nearby Newtown Creek Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility provided funding for this project via the Percent for Art program. Designed by George Trakas, the Nature Walk provides visitors with opportunities to engage with the deep history, geology, ecology and environmental issues of Newtown Creek.
