CA Women in Homeland Security Sunset Social Ferry Ride
Ride the Bay at sunset with fellow women in emergency management, marking the Great ShakeOut and 37 years since Loma Prieta.
When Loma Prieta hit at 5:04 p.m. on October 17, 1989, the Bay Bridge closed for a month and the region lost its main artery. Ferries filled the gap within days. That improvised workaround became permanent policy: the state legislature created the Water Emergency Transportation Authority and directed it to run a consolidated regional ferry system and stand ready when disaster disrupts bridge traffic in and out of San Francisco. Today WETA operates SF Bay Ferry under a mandate to move survivors, first responders, and disaster service workers when the worst day comes.
