Overview

Join us for a short birding hike and learn the essentials of birding, from identification and equipment to ethics and local hotspots.

Join us for a guided birding hike at Lula Lake and discover the tools, techniques, and resources to become a more confident birder. We’ll cover helpful digital tools for identifying and recording bird sightings, share information about local birding hotspots and upcoming regional events, and discuss best practices for birding ethically on both public and private lands. We’ll also provide tips on using binoculars and spotting scopes, including how and when to use each. Whether you’re new to birding or have more experience, the depth of the program can be tailored to the group’s interests and skill level. This will be an easy, short hike of up to two miles max.

About the Guide: Kent Pennington is a local birder who has been birding since grade school. He is a member and officer of the Tennessee Ornithological Society and holds a degree in Biology from Southern Adventist University, where he currently volunteers as a fly-fishing instructor. Kent is passionate about bird conservation and sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for birding with others.
