Lauren Klein, Tanvi Sharma, & Silas Munro present Data by Design

P&T Knitwear is pleased to welcome Lauren Klein, Tanvi Sharma, and Silas Munro to celebrate and discuss the release of their book Data by Design, which explores how the history of data visualization holds the key to designing a more just future.

They will be in conversation with Shannon Mattern, and will sign books after the talk!

Doors open at 6:30pm with the talk starting closer to 7:00pm. Come early and grab a drink from the P&T Cafe!

About the authors:
Lauren Klein is Professor of Data & Decision Sciences and English at Emory University, where she also directs the Digital Humanities Lab and the Atlanta Interdisciplinary AI Network. Her research brings together computational and critical methods to explore questions of gender, race, and justice, both in early America and today. Klein is the author (with Catherine D’Ignazio) of the award-winning Data Feminism (MIT Press, 2020), and the editor (with Matthew K. Gold) of Debates in the Digital Humanities (Univ. of Minnesota Press), among other books and papers. Her next book, Data by Design: Visualization and Power from Abolition to the Dawn of Data Science (MIT Press), will be out in October 2026.

Silas Munro is a designer, artist, writer, curator, surfer, and descendant of the Banyole people of Eastern Uganda. He founded the design studio Polymode, whose clients include MoMA, the MET, Nike, and the Hammer. Munro is the curator and author of Strikethrough: Typographic Messages of Protest at Letterform Archive and the co-curator of Reverberations: Lineages in Design History at the Ford Foundation Gallery. He contributed to W. E. B. Du Bois’s Data Portraits: Visualizing Black America, and co-authored the first BIPOC-centered design history course, Black Design in America: African Americans and the African Diaspora in Graphic Design 19th-21st Century. His visual art was recently exhibited at Data Consciousness: Reframing Blackness in Contemporary Print at Print Center New York.

Tanvi Sharma is a design technologist working at the intersection of data, aesthetics, and the humanities. She is currently an Art Director at Apple and co-author of Data by Design (MIT Press, 2026). She has previously worked at Pentagram, Public Policy Lab, and Spotify. She lives in Harlem, NY, with her two cats, Yuchi and Bubbles. More at tanvi.network.

About the moderator:
Shannon Mattern is the Director of Creative Research at the Metropolitan New York Library Council, a state-founded, member-supported non-profit linking hundreds of libraries and archives across the city. Previously, she held tenured full professorships in media studies, anthropology, and art history at The New School and the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of four books, the (co-)editor of six collections, and the author of over 100 articles and chapters about urban technology, knowledge infrastructures, maps, maintenance, data art, and other heterogenous subjects. She was the 2025 Kluge Chair in Modern Culture at the Library of Congress and the 2025 Design Indexer in residence at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
