FAB NIGHTS: Weld a Pumpkin or Spooky Luminary! (UNCA Student/Faculty/Staff)

(No experience required)

Fab Nights are a series of weekly 3-hour workshops provided by the UNCA STEAM Studio. In each session, participants will receive our general safety orientation, a tour of the space, and an in-depth tutorial for the processes and tools required for each weeks' project. The instructors may be STEAM Studio staff or our well-trained student workers! Fab Nights are an especially great way for UNCA students to learn tools and machines at STEAM Studio without taking a for-credit class. All levels and disciplines are welcome to join!

This class will provide an introduction to MIG (metal-inert gas) welding. We'll begin by talking about welding, what it is, and how it works. Then we'll get into practicing tacks and beads. We'll make either a wireframe pumpkin out of bent steel rod or a small light box (a 'luminary', meant to hold a small candle light) using MIG welding.

Before you attend, please familiarize yourself with our rules and procedures:

1. Please wear closed-toe, closed-heel shoes to the workshop. If you arrive in any other footwear, we will not be allowed into the work space.
   
2. You must wear safety glasses in the work space. These will be provided by the STEAM Studio, and must remain on at all times while you are in the work space.
   
3. You must complete a safety contract before using tools and equipment. You may use this link (Self-Enroll in STEAM Safety Contract) to self-enroll in our Safety Contract course on Canvas using your UNCA email. Please follow the instructions, watch the video, complete the quiz, download/fill out the contract, and upload it to the assignment page. If this is not completed when you arrive, you will need to complete it on-site and may miss valuable work time during the workshop.
