Dieu Donné Community Studio Day: Tours, Demos, & Experience Pulp Painting

About the Event

Discover the art of hand papermaking at Dieu Donné, Brooklyn's leading nonprofit hand papermaking studio since 1976. Join us for a free afternoon at our location in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, offering an up-close look at the ancient craft of papermaking and the contemporary artists working within the medium today.

Explore our studio and gallery, where finished works are on view alongside didactics that reveal the processes behind them. Watch our studio team demonstrate sheet forming and couching, and then try your hand at pulp painting, freehand or with stencils, on large-scale sheets set up right in our wet studio. Everyone is invited to collaborate!

Guided studio, gallery, and archive tours will be offered each hour, hosted by guest artists and Dieu Donné staff. Schedule and details coming soon.

PLEASE NOTE: While you'll be able to experiment with paper pulp, this is not a make and take event.

About Dieu Donné

Founded in 1976, Dieu Donné is the leading non-profit cultural institution dedicated to serving emerging and established artists through the collaborative creation of contemporary art using the process of hand papermaking. We introduce artists from a wide variety of practices to the creative possibilities in hand papermaking, fostering experimentation and creating innovative works of art. Our work is realized through extensive collaborations with artists. We strive to teach a new visual language, providing a transformative experience that often leads to artistic breakthroughs. We share this work with the community through our gallery, public and educational programs.

Accesibility

Dieu Donné's studio is accessible to visitors with mobility disabilities, including those who use wheelchairs, walkers, or other mobility aids. We're located on the sixth floor of Building 88 (formerly Building 3) in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Our passenger elevators are currently out of service, so all visitors will need to use the freight elevator to reach the studio. Dieu Donné staff will be on hand to guide you in and assist as needed. Once inside, there are no stairs required to move through our space. An all-gender, accessible bathroom is available onsite.

The building entrance includes a turnstile that is not wheelchair-accessible but a manual gate is available with a stair lift to the main elevators. If you'll need to use the accessible gate and/or the stair lift, please contact us in advance at dieudonne@dieudonne.org or call us at 212-226-0573 so we can have staff ready to assist.

The papermaking studio is an inherently wet space, which can make the environment warm and humid with wet floors. Rain boots and waterproof aprons are provided to all visitors for safety and comfort.
