Dos, Don'ts or Maybes: Professional Boundaries for Peer Support Specialists

Staff who work with community members in need find that their lived experience can often be the most essential part of how they initiate rapport, or it can unwittingly prompt us to dictate to individuals what they need to do instead of what they want to do. Content reviews the “Zone of Helpfulness” concept, which focuses on maintaining professional boundaries within a helpful space and is directly relevant and used for Certified Recovery Peer Advocates (CRPAs) in NYS.

This workshop discussion will explore physical, interpersonal (relationships, self-disclosure), and psychological boundaries that affect client choice and motivation, and how to support individuals using a person-centered approach.

Credits:

This training has been approved for three renewal hours (CASAC, CPP, CPS) and three initial hours (CPP, CPS) through New York State’s Office of Addiction Services and Supports (NYS OASAS). As an IC & RC member board, OASAS accredited courses are granted reciprocal approval by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, Alcohol and Drug Counselor Committee. Many other states offer reciprocity - please check with your accrediting agency.

Additionally, Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc., Training Institute is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0694.

The training is also approved for three CARC/CRPA elective hours through InUnity Alliance (formerly ASAP-NYCB).

Participants are required to attend the ENTIRE training, turn on their video cameras and actively participate in order to receive a certificate of completion.
