NodeXL Academy: Social Media Network Analysis Short Course (Live Session)

We are Social Media Researchers who want to create tools, generate and host data, and support scholarship related to social media.Social media is the term for all the ways people connect to people through computation. Mobile devices, social networks, micro-blogging and location sharing are just a few of the ways people engage in computer-mediated collective action.Mapping, measuring and understanding the landscape of social media is our mission. We support tool projects that enable the collection, analysis and visualization of social media data. We host data sets that are relevant to social media research. And we will support graduate students studying and building research related to social media.Today, our primary project is NodeXL, the free and open network overview discovery and exploration add-in for Excel 2007 (and 2010, 2013, 2019) that extends the familiar spreadsheet so that it can collect, analyze and visualize complex social networks. We plan to take on additional projects that improve the variety and quality of data available to the NodeXL social network analysis platform (among others that consume the open GraphML format). The Social Media Research Foundation is a group of researchers and practitioners working to create tools, generate and host data, and support scholarship related to social media.

Join us on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, 3:00 to 6:00 PM BST, for a live 3-hour afternoon NodeXL Academy short course in social media network analysis. In a single focused session, you will go from raw social media data to a network map that shows who drives a conversation, which communities are inside it, and how a message moves. Everything runs inside Microsoft Excel, and no programming is required. What you will learn:

Collect real data from sources such as X, Reddit, YouTube, and Wikipedia.

Calculate the network metrics that identify influential accounts: degree, betweenness, closeness, and PageRank.

Detect the communities inside a network using NodeXL's clustering.

Analyze content with sentiment analysis and the top words, hashtags, and links.

Lay out and publish a clean, shareable network map.

New this year: NodeXL Pro's new X (Apify) importer (introduced in v.565) brings X data back within reach, collect by hashtag, keyword, or user timeline with one click, and pay only for what you collect. You will also get a clear picture of how AI is reshaping social media research.

Your instructors:

Dr. Marc Smith, sociologist and director of the Social Media Research Foundation.

Dr. Verónica Espinoza, data scientist, neurobiologist, chemist, consultant, trainer and speaker, and one of NodeXL's leading educators, in English and Spanish.

Dr. Wasim Ahmed, Senior Lecturer in Marketing at the University of Hull, Research Fellow in Social Network Science and Digital Disinformation at the United Nations University, and Associate Editor of JMIR Infodemiology.
