Italian Heritage - Take a Hike Fall Series Tour
Italian immigrants shaped several neighborhoods; one west side enclave now lies in Cleveland’s Detroit-Shoreway area.
TAKE A HIKE® offers FREE in-person, guided walking tours of unique and historic neighborhoods in Cleveland from May through December.
The tour meets Saturday's in October at 1:00PM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Please arrive 15 minutes early as the tour starts promptly.
About the Tour: "While many Clevelanders may associate Italian heritage exclusively with Little Italy along Mayfield Road, the city was once home to several Italian neighborhoods—often shaped by the specific regions of Italy from which immigrants arrived. One such west side enclave, located in today’s Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood, proudly displays its roots with splashes of red, white, and green on benches, fire hydrants, and street corners. Established in the early 20th century, the community is known for its vibrant street processions and its beloved annual church festival. At its center stands Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a Roman Catholic church that remains a cornerstone of faith, culture, and tradition.
This tour will delve into Cleveland’s Italian American history, with a focus on the early immigrant enclaves that formed across the city—and a deeper exploration of the stories, heritage, and lasting impact of this unique west side community."
RESERVATIONS are requested but not required, walk-ups the day of tour are welcomed. You will complete a quick waiver at check‑in before joining the tour. If you have a group larger than 8 people, please email takeahike@historicgateway in advance to reserve your tickets.
