Join the Meltzer Schwartzberg Center for Israel Studies and the Jewish Studies Program for a conversation with Oren Kessler, acclaimed author and Goldman Visiting Professor at Georgetown University, on his award-winning book, Palestine 1936: The Great Revolt and the Roots of the Middle East Conflict.

In Palestine 1936, Kessler examines the Arab Revolt of 1936-1939, a pivotal yet often overlooked chapter in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Drawing on extensive archival research, he explores how this watershed moment shaped Palestinian national identity, transformed the Jewish community in Mandatory Palestine, and laid critical foundations for the conflict that continues to reverberate throughout the Middle East today. The book has been widely praised for its depth, balance, and narrative power. It was awarded the 2024 Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature, named one of The Wall Street Journal’s 10 Best Books of 2023, and selected as a Booklist Best Book of the Year.

Kessler will be in conversation with Michael Brenner, Seymour and Lillian Abensohn Chair in Israel Studies and Director of the Meltzer Schwartzberg Center for Israel Studies at American University. Together, they will discuss the historical significance of the 1936 revolt, its enduring legacy, and the ways in which historical narratives continue to inform contemporary debates about Israel and Palestine.

The discussion will conclude with an opportunity for audience members to participate in a Q&A session and book signing.
