Black Cinema House & The Cinema Culture Present: "TCB"

In continuation of Theaster Gates’s Black Cinema House program, born on Dorchester in 2013, Rebuild is proud to reintroduce this pillar of our programming at The Land School, in co-presentation with The Cinema Culture.

We invite you to join us for a screening of TCB: The Toni Cade Bambara School of Organizing (dir. Louis Massah & Monica Henriquez, 2025), a documentary celebrating the legacy of writer, filmmaker, educator, and cultural organizer Toni Cade Bambara, whose creative practice understood storytelling as inseparable from community. Through her life and work, the film considers how art can serve as a tool for collective thought, cultural memory, and social transformation.

Following the screening, Kayla Myers and Jada-Amina will join us for a pubic conversation reflecting on Bambara’s work, her approach to cultural organizing and community, and the lasting relevance of her ideas today.

With this reintroduction of Black Cinema House at our newest home, we're excited to bring together filmmakers, scholars, critics, students, and community members as partners and presenters, gathering around film as a critical tool for preserving Black cultural histories and uplifting the importance of archival storytelling.

About Black Cinema House

Initiated by Rebuild’s founder, Theaster Gates, in 2011 and originally housed in his former residence at 6901 S. Dorchester Avenue, Black Cinema House is a public film initiative dedicated to expanding access and interest in Black cinema and moving image culture on Chicago's South Side.

Through a host of film screenings, conversations, and workshops that support experimental and emerging filmmakers, the program has created space for communal viewing, critical dialogue, and creative exchange. Over the years, Black Cinema House has partnered with leading filmic organizations and welcomed filmmakers, artists, and scholars from around the world to share films that explore Black life, history, cultural aesthetics, and the widening possibilities of the moving image.

About The Cinema Culture

The Cinema Culture is a newly established Chicago-based nonprofit dedicated to strengthening independent film culture through community-centered exhibitions, publishing, and creative partnerships. We seek to make independent cinema more accessible and meaningful by creating thoughtful opportunities for audiences to encounter films, filmmakers and the ideas their work inspires.

About The Land School

The Land School, a new pedagogical platform at the site of the former St. Laurence Elementary School, proposes a radical model of artistic experimentation and archival stewardship, providing space, time, access, collaborative inquiry, process-driven programming, and performance, all led by an intergenerational cohort of artists, archivists, scholars, craftspeople, cultural workers, and creative organizations invested in culture as a service.

The Land School's Policies and Protocol:

Upon arrival, please enter the building at the entrance on S. Dorchester Ave.

Ride sharing is encouraged as parking is limited. Please be sure to not block the entrances and exits of our neighbors.

Firearms on the premises are strictly prohibited.

No smoking, vaping or incense is permitted inside.

No pets are allowed inside.

No professional photo/video equipment is allowed unless preapproved by Rebuild.

Please be mindful of your neighbors by respecting their personal space and bodily autonomy.

No violence - verbal or physical - will be tolerated. Any guest creating an unsafe environment will be removed from the premises immediately, at the discretion of the Rebuild staff.

We take the safety of our guests seriously. If any guest is found violating these protocols, they may be escorted off the property immediately and will not be welcome to return.
