Step beyond the iron gates of Brookmere Cemetery in Old Brooklyn.
TAKE A HIKE® offers FREE in-person, guided walking tours of unique and historic neighborhoods in Cleveland from May through December.
The tour meets Saturdays in October at 1:00PM at the entrance to the cemetery. Please arrive 15 minutes early as the tour starts promptly.
About the Tour: Step beyond the iron gates of Brookmere Cemetery in Old Brooklyn. Founded in the mid-1800s, the cemetery is home to beautiful monuments, ornate family plots, and headstones that reflect the ornamentation and symbolism of the era. Many of those buried here were German immigrants and their families, whose names still live on in the neighborhood’s streets today. Discover the stories etched in stone and how this resting place continues to connect past and present in our community.
Today, the grassroots efforts of sisters Linda and Karen who have ancestors buried here, have a made significant impact to the cemetery as work has both physically improved Brookmere Cemetery and educated and informed the public as they advocate for its historic preservation.
This tour is made possible in collaboration with Brookmere Cemetery Preservation Coalition.
Because the terrain isn’t fully paved, accessibility may vary. Scooters, wheelchairs, and walkers could encounter challenging sections and maybe impact a participant’s experience. If you have questions or want to discuss accessibility in more detail, please feel free to reach out at takeahike@historicgateway.org.
RESERVATIONS are requested but not required, walk-ups the day of tour are welcomed. You will complete a quick waiver at check‑in before joining the tour. If you have a group larger than 8 people, please email info@historicgateway.org in advance to reserve your tickets.
