Inside the Newsroom: WBEZ + Chicago Sun-Times + Vocalo

Inside the Newsroom: WBEZ + Chicago Sun-Times + Vocalo

Overview

Go inside WBEZ, the Chicago Sun-Times & Vocalo with the Chicago Headline Club, then join fellow journalists for happy hour.

The Chicago Headline Club, the nation’s largest chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, is opening doors to newsrooms across the city with Inside the Newsroom, a new series giving professional journalists, students and members of Chicago’s media community a behind-the-scenes look at how different newsrooms operate.

We’re kicking off the series at Chicago Public Media’s Navy Pier newsroom, home to WBEZ, the Chicago Sun-Times and Vocalo.

In 2025, the three editorial teams were brought together into a unified newsroom spanning radio, print and digital journalism. Now, we’re going inside.

Meet journalists working across the organization, explore the newsroom and get an up-close look at how stories move from reporting and editing to broadcast, print and digital platforms.

And the conversation doesn’t end when the tour does. Afterward, we’ll head to Billy Goat Tavern at Navy Pier for happy hour, networking and some old-fashioned journalist shop talk.

The Chicago Headline Club is all about strengthening Chicago’s journalism community, and sometimes the best connections happen after the official event is over. After the tour, join us at Billy Goat Tavern at Navy Pier at 4:30 p.m. to meet fellow journalists, reconnect with colleagues, make new connections and talk shop. While this isn’t the original Lower Michigan Avenue location, the Billy Goat has a legendary connection to Chicago journalism. There’s no official food or drink special, so everyone will order and pay for their own food and beverages.
