Jane Austen and Men: JASNA-NYM Fall Meeting

We invite you to join your fellow Janeites in Manhattan on the afternoon of Saturday, September 19th for a deep-dive into the matter of Austen, men, and masculinity — featuring Dr. Michael Kramp, Steven Orozco, Georgie Castilla, James Brent Isaacs, and Tyler Hamilton.

This event is a regional meeting of the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) New York Metropolitan Region. Like most of our gatherings, it is open to members and non-members alike; if you are not yet a JASNA member, however, we encourage you to join! Learn more on our "about" page here.

The meeting will take place in the Regina Peruggi Room at Northeastern University New York City (formerly known as Marymount Manhattan College), an ADA-accessible venue. Doors open at 1:45 PM and the program begins at 2:00 PM. We hope that you will stick around afterwards for coffee, tea, "good company," and light refreshments (fruit and sweets).

We'll begin with a lecture by Dr. Michael Kramp of Lehigh University called "How Might Jane Austen Help Us Talk About Contemporary Masculinity?" Then, JASNA-NYM's own Steven Orozco will present a Member Spotlight Talk* focused on Frank Churchill in Emma. And finally, visual artist Georgie Castilla will moderate a panel, Jane Austen Is for Men: Male Creators in the Austen Fandom, featuring James Brent Isaacs and Tyler Hamilton.

* What is a Member Spotlight Talk? We are so glad you asked! It's a new initiative, to give more individuals in our erudite JASNA community the chance to share their insights and raise issues of importance to them. Please email us if you would like to volunteer to present a 10- to 15-minute talk on an Austen-related topic at a future meeting. Those who are interested should send us a pitch, and we will do our best to slot you into a program with a corresponding theme.
