Join us to wind-down Climate Week NYC with a celebration of community & care in Far Rockaway, where the stretch of land between the ocean and the bay is only a handful of blocks, and water is a daily reminder of both the beauty and vulnerability of the peninsula.

10am Join us for a morning bird walk with RISE and the NYC Plover Project, a guided birding tour along the Rockaway shoreline! Explore the beach with expert guides and discover a wide variety of coastal birds, while learning about their habitats and conservation. Binoculars will be provided first come, first served, though you may bring your own.To join the bird walk, please also register HERE.

Join us for this special edition Climate Cafe along the restoring dunes and frontline for Hurricane Sandy... to process our climate emotions, grief, and future hopes. Hosted by Gianna Lum of the Climate Imaginarium, The Climate Psychology Alliance of North America, as well as writer, grief doula and Edgemere Alliance and The Garden by the Bay board member Elizabeth Opurum . 11:30am we'll begin the place-based scavenger hunt and walking tour featuring audio recordings from stewards and community members about the land, the peninsula, dune restoration efforts, and community vulnerabilities with Holes in the Wall Collective in partnership with RISE Rockaway, Edgemere Alliance, and the incomparable Jackie Rogers and Laquetta Little of The Garden by the Bay. With a visit to Camila A. Morales + RISE youth piece 'Reclaimed Ecologies / Ecologías Reimaginadas.' For more on the piece read the agenda below.

12pm together we will all venture across the peninsula from Beach to Bay, across Edgemere, visiting the Hunger Project, past Edgemere Farms and a special visit to the Garden by the Bay, this little slice of heaven, with community beds and individual plots, a children’s garden and all sorts of beautiful program offerings for health and thriving. We'll be joined on our walk by Quinn Robinson, who was 8 years old when Sandy hit and Juvie Anne Alfeche, public programs coordinator at RISE.

12:30p we will all end at the Beach 43rd St. Waterfront Park for a celebration at the end of Jamaica Bay, with hands-on artistic invitations from Camila A. Morales and Carine Gibert.

The park is the only active water access point in Edgemere where community members can fish, kayak and enjoy their bayfront waterfront views. Edgemere Alliance is currently spearheading a petition to bring equity, development and capital funding to the Park making it a true waterfront park that's reflective of parks within NYC Parks Network and the Rockaways. Packing list! Bring your own lunch 🥪, headphones/earbuds 🎧 for the scavenger hunt/screening and your water bottle 💧 sunscreen, hat or umbrella, depending on weather. We’ll provide snacks and backup water.
