Strong Island Birding Walk with James Junda

Join ornithologist and CCF Trustee James Junda for an afternoon walk through beautiful and remote Strong Island, the “gem” of Pleasant Bay to view and discuss the rich birdlife found along the island shore and woodlands. The walk is timed for low tide to maximize the opportunity for seeing water birds.

Acquired in 1973 from the Horst Family, Strong Island consists of 75 acres of upland owned by CCF and 59 acres of town-owned marsh. Located in Pleasant Bay, the property has both the limitations of isolation from the Cape as a whole and also the likelihood of unique migrational visitations. The island-long trail system winds through pine and oak woodlands filled with native shrubs and wildlife representative of the general area.

Transportation to and from the island will be provided on private boats.

Your Guide:

James Junda has been studying birds for 20 years but watching them his whole life. His journey started during summers with his grandparents at Schoolhouse Pond in Chatham and has taken him to five continents documenting birds. He has been operating songbird banding stations at Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary and around the lighthouse on Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge since 2011. He recently was elected to CCF's Board of Trustees.

Special Notes:

Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and be prepared with water, sunglasses, and sunblock as needed. Don't forget binoculars if you have them!

• You will be notified by telephone if the walk must be postponed until the rain date (September 20th @ 2:00pm) because of inclement weather. Your ticket(s) will be fully refunded if we cannot hold the walk on the rain date.
