Stealing Freedom - Book Talk with Author Elisa Carbone
Learn about "Stealing Freedom" and its local connections from the author!
Join Peerless Rockville as we welcome a local author! Elisa Carbone will share artifacts, methods, and stories about her research and experiences as she wrote her book Stealing Freedom (Knopf, 1998). Stealing Freedom is based on the true story of Ann Maria Weems who was enslaved in Rockville and who made her daring escape along the Underground Rail Road when she was a young teenager. You will also hear about the creation of the The Underground Railroad Experience Trail, located at the Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park at 16501 Norwood Road in Sandy Spring, Maryland. This trail was first hiked by Elisa leading Oprah Winfrey as part of an immersive historical experience for Oprah, developed by local historian Anthony Cohen, while Oprah was making her movie Beloved.
