Fall Organic Vegetable Gardening in the Bay Area

This IN-PERSON WORKSHOP will be hosted at Alemany Farm

Fall in SF is an abundant time – we are still harvesting our summer foods—but it is also time to plant your cold season garden – bok choi, kale, chard, broccoli, kohlrabi – as well. In this workshop we will discuss how to gracefully pivot from summer to fall, including discussion of crop varieties that thrive in our climate, and ideal planting times. We will also discuss planting techniques, nutrient needs, basic irrigation requirements, and more. Bring your veggie and fruit gardening questions–there will be time for a Q&A!

Vanessa Lieu (they/them) is the Farm Manager at Alemany Farm. Vanessa is an earth tender and educator, and is deeply passionate about nurturing networks of relationality with the land and all her beings. They bring with them over 10 years of experience in urban agriculture, public health, healthcare, and community education. As a settler working and living on unceded Ohlone land, they recognize that land and liberation are inseparable, and they are so honored to care for the land and community at Alemany Farm in ways that fortify us to liberate all our peoples and lands from imperial oppression.

Suggested Donation: $35 - no one turned away for lack of funds. Our workshops are donation-based and support the growing and distribution of free produce at Alemany Farm. We encourage everyone to make an offering commensurate with your means, and in an amount that feels powerful to you - such gifts make workshops like these possible. We also do not want money to be a barrier to entry. Please reach out if you would like to attend but are unable to donate. If you can afford to make a bigger donation, your contribution will support the work of Alemany Farm and the opportunity for others with more limited funds to attend this class.

Accessibility Information: This workshop will be held outdoors. About two thirds of the workshop will be a lecture / discussion and Q&A held under the shade of the willow tree and then a hands-on portion in the raised beds. The raised beds are on the lower level of the farm that is only accessible by stairs or dirt path down a hill. Alemany Farm is not ADA accessible at this time. Pathways are on uneven ground. The bathrooms are accessible only by stairway. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Q&A

Is there parking onsite?

Yes, we have parking onsite. You can also find in the surrounding neighborhood. We encourage carpooling, biking and using public trasport if available to you.

Can I get to the farm on public transport?

Yes! Muni works and Glen Park BART is a 15 min walk away. We recommend using the written directions at the bottom of this page as Google Maps can be a little misleading.

Rain will likely cancel and reschedule the workshop. If rain is in the forecast we will be in touch with you (through eventbrite) a few days prior to the workshop.
