12-1: Painting the Medieval Way, with Lady Aaradyn Ghyoot
Learn to paint like a medieval monk! We will look at the materials and techniques the Middle Ages and Renaissance employ to make manuscript images, then you’ll try your hand at painting the medieval way. Participants will leave with a brush, paints, and their painted piece.
Aaradyn Ghyoot is an active scribe of the East Kingdom, focusing on the styles and techniques of manuscripts and charters between 800 CE and 1450 CE. Outside the SCA, Erika Morton is a fine artist and photographer. Her work has been shown at international juried art shows in Seattle, Boston, Los Angeles, and Glasgow, Scotland.

1-2: Renaissance Dance, with Justin du Coeur
Come join in some fun and lively dances of the 15th and 16th centuries! French Bransles, English Almans, and Italian Balli -- we'll sample several different dance styles. Everything will be taught, and called in the gender-free Larks and Robins style.
Justin runs the local monthly SCA dance practice, which is open to all -- for more details, see https://carolingia.eastkingdom.org/arts-and-science-recreations/dance/ Music provided by the Waytes of Carolingia, our local dance band!
2-3: Sari Wrapping Class, with Lakshmi Amman
The subcontinent of India has been wearing draped garments since we’ve had statues and pictures from this area. While jewelry, hair and other fashion evolves, love of draped garments has stayed relatively consistent. In this class we’ll learn hands on how to drape two of the most popular styles of draped garments - a fishtail and the nivi wrap. There will be draping instructions for all genders/gender identities, and a lot of practical information for how to be functional and look good doing it.
We’ll also run through an overview of some of the art in this region that shows these drapes and take a look at some of the fabrics that are most likely to be seen on historic people wearing these drapes. Please wear clothing that is close fitting enough to put layers on top of - leggings, shorts, etc, and any upper body clothing you feel comfortable in. If you have a sari you’ve been dying to try on, bring it on by, but the instructor will also have loaner items.
3-4: English Country Dance, with Justin du Coeur
The English Dancing Master, by John Playford in 1651, popularized a social dance style that is still done today, and which led to modern Scottish Country and Contra dance. Come learn a few dances from that first book, taught in the modern gender-free Larks and Robins style. No experience required, just enthusiasm to get up and learn some not-terribly-hard dances!
Justin runs the local monthly SCA dance practice, which is open to all -- for more details, see https://carolingia.eastkingdom.org/arts-and-science-recreations/dance/ Music provided by the Waytes of Carolingia, our local dance band!
4-5: SCA Open House! No ticket required!
Today's workshops (and the combat demos downstairs) show just a few of the activities practiced by the Society for Creative Anachronism -- sca.org, a worldwide club that recreates the "good bits" of pre-17th century history, which is open to anyone who wants to play! So come meet some folks from the club, see some more of these activities, and have a chance to ask questions.
5-6: Historical Shortstaff, with Tom Courtney
A simple routine to introduce Renaissance short staff technique, taken from a manuscript by Paulus Hector Mair.
Tom is a retired computer programmer who has done a great deal of polearm fighting in the Society of Creative Anachronism, and has concentrated on historical techniques for the last fifteen years or so.
6-7: Medieval Cooking in a Modern Kitchen, with Fortunata
Come explore some of the basics of pre-modern cookery! Learn about what were people eating, how do we know that, and how you can try it at home!
7-8: Medieval Board Games, with Justin du Coeur
Seven-Sided Backgammon; Rhythmomachy (aka Arithmetical Chess); Game of the Goose (ancestor to The Game of Life!); Viking Chess -- these are just a few of the many cool board games played before the year 1600 which have been mostly forgotten today. We'll introduce a bunch of different historical games, and then folks can break off into pairs and groups and play for a while.
Justin "l'Ace du Calais" is the Ace of the Low Company of Gamesters and Gamblers, our local historical-gaming group that gets together every other month -- see https://carolingia.eastkingdom.org/arts-and-science-recreations/low-company-of-gamesters-and-gamblers/ for more information!
