<h3>Class Pictures</h3><h3>Stephen Callis</h3><h3>PAC LA Gallery Space at the Reef</h3><h3>Opening Reception:</h3><h3>Saturday, August 29, 5:00 - 8:00 PM</h3> The Photographic Arts Council Los Angeles is pleased to host the exhibition Class Pictures by Stephen Callis. The Opening Reception will be August 29, during the <a href="https://www.the-reef.com/reefarts" title="https://www.the-reef.com/reefarts" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Reef Open House</a>. Entry to both events is free. <a href="https://www.stephencallis.org/photography.html" title="https://www.stephencallis.org/photography.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Stephen Callis</a> is a documentary photographer from Southern California interested in how the struggles of land use and development leave their mark on the landscape. He has documented the Los Angeles River and its bridges that connect the city. In 2007, after a brushfire scorched Griffith Park, he documented the devastation of the park. In addition, he has collaborated with labor unions to produce two bilingual (English/Spanish) photonovelas documenting the struggles of janitors and housekeepers trying to unionize. Callis is a Professor of Photography at Moorpark Community College. Callis created an ongoing series of portraits with students at Moorpark beginning in 2018. Callis notes: I began making these portraits of my students in 2018, usually during their portrait assignment in my Beginning Photography classes. One of the first questions I asked the students to consider was “what makes a good portrait?” My students had a range of answers, but most agreed that a good portrait represented the person as they knew them. Good enough, I thought, but is that enough? And what happens when the viewer is unfamiliar with the subject? How do these portraits engage (or not) an audience of strangers beyond the classrooms of the community college where they were made? Event is free and open to the public.
