In The Field: Oak Haven Birding Walk

Celebrate the final weeks of summer with a morning of birding at Oak Haven Preserve, one of Bear Yuba Land Trust’s newest preserves. Join expert birder Rudy Darling for an easygoing walk through this 408-acre landscape as we look and listen for both year-round residents and birds passing through on their seasonal migration.

Whether you’re new to birding or have a well-worn pair of binoculars, you’re invited to join us. With open meadows, ponds, flowing creeks, and diverse habitat, Oak Haven offers plenty to discover. Keep your eyes to the sky for soaring hawks, scan the trees and grasses for songbirds, and listen for the calls of birds that can be easier to hear than see.

We’ll walk approximately 1–2 miles on dirt roads and off-trail, with some uneven terrain and tall grass. The walk will be relatively easy, but sturdy footwear is recommended. There are no amenities onsite.

What to bring: Binoculars if you have them, water, snacks. Come curious, bring your questions, and get ready to see Oak Haven from a bird’s-eye perspective!

WHAT: In The Field: Oak Haven Birding Walk

WHEN: Saturday, September 12, 7:30am-10am

WHERE: Meet at Penn Valley Park and Ride Lot EAST, on Rough & Ready Highway, just off Hwy 20, to carpool to the Preserve.

Location Information: Parking is limited at the Preserve so we will meet at the Park and Ride at 7:30am to carpool. To get to the Park and Ride, take Hwy 20 west of Grass Valley towards Marysville. After about 6 miles, turn right onto the Rough and Ready Highway. The Park and Ride will be your first right. Look for the "BYLT Event" sign and pull into the lot. If you have a larger car and are open to being a carpool driver, we'd welcome your help. The Preserve is about 10 minutes from the Park and Ride.

HOW: Registration is required and space limited. Tickets are $10 per person.
