Course Description:
This class will introduce critical concepts of the 2021 International Existing Building Code (The source of the 2021 Michigan Rehabilitation Code for Existing Buildings). It will provide a basis for the correct use and application of the code. The discussion will build an understanding of the intent of the code through detailing basic tables, categorizations, and a case study. The class objectives include:
- Recognize the limitations and extent of the codes related to existing buildings.
- Recognize how the IEBC offers alternatives and incentives to building owners to maintain their buildings and to continue to initiate upgrades towards compliance with more contemporary editions of the codes.
- Identify the three different compliance methods offered by the IEBC.
- Recognize the classifications of work associated with existing buildings.
- Identify fire protection systems that need to be upgraded.
- Recognize vertical openings that need partial or complete enclosure.
