IDEATON for Shared Futures

Kraków is designing the Stanisław Lem Centre for Future Narratives (Centrum Narracji Przyszłości im. Stanisława Lema)- a unit conceived as an incubator for various regional and national institutions, where culture becomes an instrument for understanding and co-producing futures, and where students, researchers, municipal actors and business meet around shared design processes. The Centre does not exist yet. That is precisely why we are here.

Before its premises are fixed, the Culture Trends Observatory (OTK), futures research and design unit of KBF (Krakow Festival Office) is running a series of elicitation workshops with the constituencies the Centre is meant to serve. Two editions have already been held with students and doctoral candidates from Kraków's universities. This one is for STS researchers.

Over two hours of structured group work, we ask what such an institution would have to look like to be genuinely useful to research: what forms of collaboration, access and infrastructure it would need to offer, whose knowledge it would legitimise, and which failure modes you would predict for a city funded body claiming to speak about futures.

The session is also a live test of Future-Oriented Policymaking (FOP) instruments developed by the JRC's Science for Policy unit. Conclusions feed into case-study material for training European public administrations.
