Although Freud moved in elite musical circles and even treated renowned musicians, he famously struggled to connect with music himself—and was, according to some, even put off by it.

This lecture will explore how Freud’s revolutionary ideas shaped 20th-century musical discourse and how the sounds of his time may have influenced his thinking. We’ll examine the music Freud likely encountered while developing his seminal theories and speculate on how it may have informed the man behind psychoanalysis.

Dr. Tom Rizzuto is a professor of music history, guitar, and media at Molloy University and SUNY Old Westbury. He holds advanced degrees in music education, musicology, and Educational Leadership for Diverse Learning Communities. His TEDx Talk, “Why Streaming Can’t Replace Physical Media,” was selected as an editor’s pick by TED.com. His research on music and cultural change has appeared in Discovery Magazine, History Magazine, Arts Education Policy Review, and on the Rock and Roll Archaeology podcast.
