Slow Roll with Outdoor Retailers - Mpls : The Miracle and Mandate

Overview

Minneapolis: Miracle and Mandate, a ride with Outdoor Retailer. the route traces a hard duality of Minneapolis' outdoors Culture & racism

Black Bike Week MN, the annual celebration of Black cycling heritage observed in Minneapolis since 2015, returns August 19–26, 2026 with eight days of rides, storytelling, and community gatherings. This year's program opens on the same morning Outdoor Retailer convenes at the Minneapolis Convention Center for its first-ever Minnesota show, placing Black Bike Week's work in front of a national outdoor industry audience. Minneapolis: Miracle and Mandate — Ride the Duality a ride co-hosted by Slow Roll MSP and Melanin In Motion in collaboration with Outdoor Retailer. Rolling out from Loring Park at Grant and Willow 4 blocks from the Convention Center, the route traces a hard duality: the same century of culture and policy that produced one of the most celebrated urban regional park systems in the world also produced some of the deepest racial disparities in the nation — and, within them, one of the most influential small Black communities in America.

Two things are true about this city, and we're going to ride through both of them.

Minneapolis produced a park system so ambitious it became the model other cities copy — a chain of lakes, a Grand Rounds, a promise that green space would never be more than six blocks from a front door. Culture and policy made that. Deliberate, funded, sustained.

Culture and policy also made the racial covenant, the redline, the highway routed straight through a Black neighborhood, and the homeownership gap that still ranks among the widest in the nation. Same decades. Same institutions. Often the same signatures.

And in the middle of that pressure, one of the most influential small Black communities in America built itself anyway — producing civil rights leadership, labor organizing, music that changed the world, and a tradition of outdoor leadership that runs straight into this ride.

We roll through both stories on the same wheels, because they aren't separate stories. This is what it looks like when you refuse to choose between celebrating a place and telling the truth about it.

This ride is a special collaboration with Outdoor Retailer, convening at the Minneapolis Convention Center the same week for its first Minnesota show. Industry professionals, local riders, and first-timers roll together — because the goal is the same one we've carried since 2015: every community realizing the life benefits of the outdoors, nature, and adventure.

Hosted by Slow Roll MSP and Melanin In Motion.
