Erosion Control on North Slope of Catalinas (Sept. 25)

The Work

We will be creating loose rock structures to halt erosion, increase water absorption, and support plant growth in drainages near a control road at the top of the Santa Catalina Mountains. These low-tech structures can make huge differences and are a great tool for transforming landscapes. We'll be getting dirty, bending, lifting, and digging with tools provided by SIA.

What to Expect/Bring

We will be building rock structures, which will entail carrying, moving, and placing rocks of various sizes. Some heavy lifting will be required, though no one will be asked to lift more than they feel capable. Be prepared for getting dirty as we will also be digging as part of the building process.

• SIA will provide potable water, and folks are welcome to bring their own as well, as there is no water onsite.
• Be prepared to unplug — there is limited or no cellphone or internet service where we'll be working.
• Bring work clothes, work gloves, and appropriate close-toed boots/shoes that you don't mind getting dirty and potentially torn.
• Bring sun protection: sunscreen, long-sleeves, hat, etc.
• Bring a refillable water bottle and a daypack for snacks, lunch, and gear.

Location

We will be working in one of the highest drainages off the Old Mt. Lemmon Control Road near the top of the Santa Catalina Mountains. We will all meet at the Oracle Ridge Trailhead, near the top of the mountain.

Getting There

Oracle Ridge Trailhead is accessible by two-wheel drive and low-clearance vehicles; however the last 0.25 miles are on a dirt road where four-wheel drive and high-clearance vehicles are strongly recommended.

Option 1

Meet at the SIA office at 3127 N Cherry Ave. at 7:30 a.m. on Friday to caravan/carpool to Oracle Ridge Trailhead.

Option 2

If you would like to meet us at the Oracle Ridge Trailhead, please arrive by 9 a.m. Detailed meet-up directions will be emailed to registered participants in the week before the trip.

From Tucson: (39 miles) Take the Catalina Highway off Tanque Verde Road in Tucson. Drive up 29 miles and turn right onto N Mt Lemmon Rd, where the Mt. Lemmon Fire Station is (just before Summerhaven), and park at the Oracle Ridge Trailhead (see map).

Trip Logistics

• Friday, 7:30 a.m. — meet with SIA staff at our office to carpool to Oracle Ridge Trailhead
• Friday, 9 a.m. — everyone will meet up at Oracle Ridge Trailhead. We will work throughout the day with a break for lunch.
• Friday, 6 p.m. — we will finish up in the afternoon and plan to be back to our Tucson office by 6 p.m.

Unfortunately, pets are not allowed on this trip.
