How can we talk about the complexities of contemporary antisemitism if we don’t have shared language about where it comes from?

We’ll explore with Dr. Gregg Drinkwater (Program Director of UC Berkeley’s Antisemitism Education Initiative) such questions as:

Why has some form of anti-Jewish bias and hatred existed, in one form or another, across so many regions and across such long periods of time? Can we trace a line between ancient anti-Judaism and modern antisemitism? Where does Israel fit in? What is the history of the term antisemitism and what are the current battles over its definition? What are some of the antisemitic tropes we can learn to spot in today’s politics and culture?

Dr. Gregg Drinkwater

Dr. Gregg Drinkwater is a lecturer in Jewish studies at UC Berkeley and program director of Berkeley’s Antisemitism Education Initiative. He holds a PhD in U.S. History from the University of Colorado, Boulder, with a specialization in Jewish history and LGBTQ history. Drinkwater has taught courses at UC Berkeley, the University of Colorado, and at Rutgers on American Jewish history; genocide and the Holocaust; queer U.S. history; gender and sexuality in Judaism; and global Jewish history from the ancient world to the present.
