Join us for a fascinating evening exploring how the letterforms that surround us shape the way we live, think, and move through New York City. From the earliest human markings to the fonts on your phone, typography has been the invisible infrastructure of communication—guiding us, teaching us, persuading us, and sometimes even manipulating us.

In this lecture, Elizabeth Carey Smith will trace how typography in New York has informed everything from city navigation and public life to personal identity and self-expression. You’ll discover how type helps educate, inspire, declare, instigate, and indoctrinate, and why the design of letters is never neutral.

Elizabeth Carey Smith is an independent typographer and brand designer based in New York City. A graduate of the Cooper Union’s Typeface Design program, she runs ECS, a studio focused on typographic work for publishing, the arts, fashion, consumer goods, and tech. She is an adjunct professor of design at Parsons and President Emerita of the Type Directors Club.
