Cocktails & Complicity: Collective Care for Mothers and Families
Part 4 of our 4-part series on Community Care. Location TBD.
How did your workplace help (or hurt) your experience as a parent?
Becoming a parent is no easy feat. Add the pressures, policies, and slights felt at work, from the motherhood penalty to inflexible environments, and it can feel like you're asked to do the impossible: be a good parent and good employee at the same time.
Join us as we dive into the structures and policies that can make or break the parenting experience at work, and the cultural pressures that add to the mix. You'll have the chance to share your own experiences with us, too: tell us what went right, or tell us what went wrong. We'll come together to discuss solutions.
The discussion will be followed by a Q&A. Lite bites and beverages will be provided. Space is limited, so get your tickets now and avoid the waitlist!
Alternatives' "Cocktails & Complicity" is a conversation series led by Executive Director Bessie Alcantara to unpack the intersection of capitalism, nonprofits, and philanthropy, and how each of these areas reinforce systemic oppression rather than challenge it. This series provides a space for guests to understand the challenges of navigating the nonprofit and philanthropic world, especially as POC in leadership. Past speakers include Leslé Honoré (Urban Gateways), Ayoka Samuels (City Colleges of Chicago), Jamyle Cannon (the Bloc), and Tanya Lozano (Healthy Hood Chi).
Attendees have shared that this event series "feels like therapy," and they leave feeling less alone in their emotions, experiences, and struggles navigating the nonprofit world. We love creating space to connect with peers who feel the same way we do about imagining new, meaningful ways to work.
Please note: Registration for this event is a pay-what-you-can donation; the suggested donation is $5. You can donate as much as you are able to - donations of all sizes are accepted. Donations help us cover the costs for space usage, food, and other related costs, and are non-refundable.
