Join us for free public tours of Alan Michelson's monumental public artwork, The Oyster at Governors Island.

Statue Of Liberty Vista

Part landform, part amphitheater, Alan Michelson's monumental public artwork <a href="https://moreart.org/projects/the-oyster/" title="https://moreart.org/projects/the-oyster/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Oyster </a>(2026) references Indigenous geoglyphs and shaped shell middens, inviting visitors to reflect on the interwoven histories of extraction, trade, stewardship, displacement, and environmental change embedded in New York Harbor.This docent-led tour will run for ~40 minutes and will touch on local Indigenous history and themes of ecological restoration in Alan Michelson’s artwork and draw on the interventions of the Billion Oyster Project in New York Harbor.Tours are rain or shine, so please bring appropriate gear, water, and sunscreen, as there is little shade on the site.Tours are appropriate for all ages and will start promptly at the allotted hour.We ask that groups of more than ten people send us an email to dylan@moreart.org so we can accommodate.

<h2>Location &amp; Accessibility</h2>Tours will meet at The Oyster, located at the “Statue of Liberty Vista” on the western promenade of Governors Island.To get to Governors Island, you will take the ferry from:Battery Maritime Building, 10 South Street in Lower Manhattan. <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/6AKZVuLVw29P2q6n8" title="https://maps.app.goo.gl/6AKZVuLVw29P2q6n8" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Click here</a> for Google Maps directions.Subway: 1 to South Ferry, 4, 5 to Bowling Green, or R to Whitehall StreetBus: M9, M15, M20, M55 How to get to The Oyster site from Soissons Landing: 15 minute walk* along the western promenade.Walking out of Soissons Landing, head right at the top of the hill as you come off the boat. Follow the path until you get to Castle Williams where you’ll meet the water. Walk along the water towards the Statue of Liberty until you land at the Oyster.There is a restroom in the LMCC building at Soissons Landing, and two portable restrooms a 5-7 minute walk from the installation site.
