Spotlight: Examining the Microcosm of Indie Publishing

If you're a book lover, then you might follow the releases of a particular publishing house, or you might have paid attention to the imprint names on the book spines and copyright pages. There are the houses we may know colloquially, such as Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster, but what about the smaller houses? Beyond just the wide scope of corporate publishing houses, there exist midsize and small presses that publish incredible literature. One of your favorite books could have come from one of these small houses!

In part two of our Spotlight event series, Examining the Microcosm of Indie Publishing, Feminist Press's editorial director Jeanne Thorton and editor Kameel Mir will discuss the history of one such small publisher and walk attendees through the differences between their nonprofit publisher and other indie presses.

What is an independent publisher? What's the difference between an indie house and a larger publishing house? What's the difference between a for-profit publisher and a non-profit publisher? Why choose to publish with an indie press? Jeanne and Kameel will answer these and any burning questions you might have!

This is a virtual and in-person HYBRID event. Registration will close on Tuesday, October 20, at 12pm EDT.

Jeanne Thornton (she/her) is the author of A/S/L, Summer Fun (winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Fiction), and others, as well as the current editorial director at Feminist Press, copublisher of Instar Books, and cohost of Brooklyn's World Transsexual Forum open mic. Her writing has appeared in n+1, WIRED, Evergreen Review, and other places; she has taught for One Story, McCormack Writing Center, Lambda Literary, Mendocino Coast Writers Conference, Writing Co-Lab, and more. Kameel Mir (she/her) is an editor and rights associate at Feminist Press. She has an MFA in Fiction from Brooklyn College. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in Lux Magazine, The New Inquiry, Burial, Acacia, and other outlets. She has also taught writing and composition at Brooklyn College and Columbia University. She is originally from Atlanta and now lives in Brooklyn, where she loves to write, go on solo dates to the movies, and take long walks when weather permits.
