Touch Grass Day-Tripper: Wild Creatives (Hanky Code Embroidery)

Touch Grass Day-Tripper: Wild Creatives (Hanky Code Embroidery)

Overview

Day-Tripper: hanky code embroidery workshop

Explore, create, and connect in nature's boundless playground. Our curated day events are designed to immerse you in the beauty of nature while igniting your creative spark.

This hankie code embroidery workshop brings together craft and history through the iconic cruising code. Through the workshop you will learn about the origins of the code, what it all means, and how to use it, practice basic embroidery techniques, and have the chance to personalise and take away your very own customised hankie.

The workshop will begin with introductions, lead onto a talk about the code, then a basic embroidery demonstration, finishing with time to work on your own embroidery. @jeng_au will come round and support participants with their pieces. All skill levels are welcome.

This session is facilitated by Jeng. Jeng (like Jenga without the A) is a London-based workshop facilitator/ community builder/ creative art director/ graphic designer/ cultural curator/ event producer/ maker/ ideas person/ problem solver/ listener/ learner/ bread baker/ mushroom grower/ title hoarder/ they/ them/ taurus.

This workshop and several others are being hosted to celebrate the launch of our first exhibition, Earth to Us. An archive of queer folk of colour in nature. You can find out more about the exhibition here.

About Touch Grass

Touch Grass is an outdoor community for queer women, trans and non-binary people of colour.

We are committed to fostering community growth through outdoor gatherings and wellness-focused trips that encourage us to rekindle our relationship with nature. Our immersive experiences go beyond relaxation — they're about empowerment, healing, and forging meaningful connections.

Our vision is for queer people of colour to see the outdoors as a space where we belong. A 2020 report by Friends of the Earth found that nearly 40% of people from minority ethnic backgrounds in England live in the most green space-deprived neighbourhoods, compared with only 14% of white people — and that people from minority ethnic backgrounds are significantly less likely to spend time in the countryside than white people. We want to change this. We deserve joyful, safe access to the emotional well-being and physical health benefits of nature too.

We believe creativity and nature go hand in hand, which is why most of our events encourage you to embrace nature and your inner creative spirit.
