Saw-Whets & S'mores: Indiana Dunes

Burn the midnight oil with the Indiana Audubon as they bring the 18th season of Northern Saw-whet Owl research at Indiana Dunes State Park. On select dates, visitors can get an up-close look at Indiana's smallest owl and the science behind its study.

Led by experienced ornithologists, guests will witness the delicate process of owl banding and learn about the owl's stunning plumage and migration patterns. From seasoned birders to curious night owls to marshmallow lovers, all are welcome to experience an intimate look at our Project Owlnet research in action.

What to Expect

Programs begin at 7 p.m. CT (6 p.m. starting Nov. 1). Participants can observe captured owls being banded during hourly checks. You're welcome to stay as long as you like, as volunteers do a minimum of three checks each night. Bring a lawn chair, snacks, warm clothing, and a flashlight. A campfire is available most nights with s'mores. Participants can observe captured owls being banded during hourly checks. Because these are wild migrating birds, owl activity varies from night to night and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Registration

This program is free with the Indiana Dunes State Park entrance fee, but advance registration is required. Space is limited to protect the owls and provide everyone with a quality experience.

Location

These events will be held at Duneside Shelter in the Indiana Dunes State Park, 1600 N 25 E, Chesterton, Indiana. After entering the state park, follow signs past the Wilson Shelter. All event times are in Central Time.

Cancellations

The weather conditions may impact our nightly programs. If your registered night is canceled due to rain or high winds, we'll gladly help you reschedule for another night, pending availability.
