Art Reception: Between Two Worlds by French Painter Julien Rey
Dive into the ethereal paintings of Julien Rey & his world of black & white where French flair meets brushstrokes with a Buddhist touch.
See the world through the eyes of French painter Julien Rey. Color blind, Rey sees the world only in black and white — a contrast reflected not only in his palette, but in the subjects of his work.
Rey's paintings begin in the city, where his architectural approach to urban compositions, sharp lines and rich texture evoke the constant movement and organized chaos of city life. On the other side is a natural world untouched by urbanization: towering mountaintops, the tranquility of a boat on water, and the peacefulness of a single tree.
Between Two Worlds finds Rey at the intersection of these contrasts: city and nature, black and white, present and future, always searching for where the two meet and exist in harmony.
Threaded through Julien's work is a meditative quality drawn from his commitment to Buddhism and meditation. Rey's distinctive lacquer technique, which lends his work an almost photographic finish, is a traditional Chinese method passed down to him by Buddhist monks. Gold leaf offers touches of warmth and light within his black-and-white world, creating a visual journey unlike any other.
