Bundschu Rhinefarm Estate · Sonoma Valley, California · Est. 1858✦California's oldest family-owned winery — six generations of farming,
winemaking, and a love of the land that began in 1858.1858The Story of Gundlach Bundschu From Bavaria to Sonoma — Six Generations of American Wine Jacob Gundlach sailed from Bavaria to San Francisco in 1850, drawn by the gold rush. He passed on the mines and started a brewery instead — which proved its own goldmine — and used the proceeds to purchase 320 acres of land in Sonoma Valley in 1858. He named the estate Rhinefarm, after the river of his homeland. His daughter-in-law married a prominent poet, Charles Bundschu, and the combination of farming, winemaking, and an artistic worldview has driven the family ever since. Today, the sixth generation of the Bundschu family farms the same Rhinefarm estate — now regenerative organic certified — producing wines of remarkable character from some of California's most storied soil. Gundlach Bundschu is not just California's oldest family-owned winery. It is a living piece of American history.
