Books, Films and Music and the Vietnam War Join us for an examination of America’s literature, films and music during and about the Vietnam War, as related by Vietnam veteran Paul Todd.U.S. Army veteran Paul Todd was teaching middle school history in 1971 when he was drafted. After his advanced training at Fort Rucker, Alabama, he received orders for Vietnam. He was stationed at Tuy Hoa, then at Artillery Hill, a firebase located in Pleiku in the Central Highlands.Todd’s presentation will examine a range of literary and cultural materials, including novels, memoirs and selected historical accounts, with particular emphasis on Vietnam War fiction that conveys the lived experiences of Vietnam veterans. In addition to written narratives, he will analyze the soundscape of the war by considering the music commonly heard by service members while deployed. His program will further incorporate a critical assessment of cinematic representations of the conflict, evaluating how films construct, distort or accurately portray the realities of Vietnam. Although Vietnam War films, like the novels produced in the same era, were created primarily for entertainment, each offers a distinct narrative that contributes to a broader understanding of the men and women who served and the complex nature of the war itself.
