Sunflowers, or Black Women's Other Favorite Fruit

In this 50-minute, one-act hybrid performance of Sunflowers, or Black Women’s Other Favorite Fruit, the play follows two sisters, Kweli (“Sissy”) and Lizazi (“LeeLee”), navigating the immediate aftermath of their mother’s sudden death and the weight of caring for their paralyzed father upstairs. Sissy seeks personal liberation and artistic growth away from her family, while LeeLee desperately fights to keep the family home for her own reasons. Guided by a neighborhood chorus of women, the sisters clash in a heartbreaking struggle between individual expansion and holding the ground of generational legacy. The performance seamlessly blends read choral odes with staged, memorized scenes.
