Pysanky Egg Art class at the Johnstown Slavic Festival

Pysanky Egg Art class at the Johnstown Slavic Festival

Overview

Learn the ancient Ukrainian tradition of pysanky egg decorating. All skill levels are welcome, and supplies are provided.

Discover the Fascinating World of Ukrainian Egg Decorating!

Dive into a colorful cultural craft at our hands-on Pysanky workshop. While many dabble in this art as a hobby, these decorated eggs are an integral part of spring religious traditions among Ukrainians, Slovaks, Poles, and other Eastern European peoples.

This special session will be taught by expert instructor Carol Novosel, whose ancestors immigrated to the United States from Eastern Ukraine. Carol brings over 50 years of experience to the classroom, having taught thousands of students and sold tens of thousands of pysanky throughout her career. Her celebrated artwork has been gifted to President Clinton, Dan Rather, and Barbara Walters, and was even featured by Alex Trebek on an episode of Jeopardy!

Now, you can learn directly from a master. You will get hands-on experience using traditional wax-resist techniques to create your own beautiful Pysanky eggs. Perfect for beginners and art lovers alike—come ready to have fun, learn from a renowned expert, and take home a unique masterpiece. All supplies are included, so just bring your creativity, excitement, and cultural curiosity!
