About Safekeeping:

Set in 2027 amid multiple international conflicts, the story follows Tenley Ward, a Dallas mother whose nineteen-year-old son is drafted into war. In response, she forms MOMS (Mothers Opposing More Senselessness), a grassroots anti-draft movement that rapidly gains national attention.

As her son’s deployment nears and pressure mounts ahead of a presidential visit to Dallas, Tenley is torn between the political movement she helped build and the family responsibilities waiting at home. Her husband resents the time and energy she pours into activism, while her younger children still need her as both a mother and caretaker.

As Tenley struggles with her marriage, she forms an increasingly complicated connection with Leland “Privately” Marks, a young Marine veteran struggling to rebuild his identity after combat. Haunted by his experiences overseas, Privately is drawn both to MOMS’ mission and to Tenley herself. Though separated by age and life experience, the emotional and physical attraction between them becomes impossible to ignore, forcing both characters to confront loneliness, grief, longing, and the lives they imagined for themselves before war reshaped everything.

About Claudia Hinz:

Claudia Hinz lives in Bend, Oregon. She graduated from Harvard and received her MA in English from Southern Methodist University. She worked as a television reporter for network affiliates in Northern California, Seattle, and Dallas. Hinz grew up in the aftermath of the Vietnam War era and when she was a child, her father hosted gatherings in their home for Vietnam veterans and the families of POW/MIA (prisoners of war, missing in action). Her work has been published in Women’s Books, Story Magazine, The Boston Globe, 1859 Oregon’s Magazine, and BLUNTmoms.
