This play is a production of the Methexis Institute Theater Troupe. The Methexis Institute is a new Austin-based research institute that promotes the advanced study of theology and philosophy. Like a highway from the sky, we aspire to bridge the disciplinary boundaries that separate these two intertwined fields of study and reflection on the highest ideas of life. By exploring the theological potential of philosophy, and the philosophical rationale of theology, we draw out the deeper meaning of both in living conversation with the leading currents of thought.

Following the release of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, we conceived of this play for the purpose of out-performing Nolan with a bilingual theatrical adaptation that would be more faithful to Homer's era and more daring in its epic scope of divine and human themes. Rather than rendering myth as a naturalized illusion or a simple allegory, the direction of this play illustrates Friedrich W. J. Schelling's concept of a "tautegory", that is, a saturated historical symbol that unfolds across successive ages into ever new layers of self-interpreting meaning.

To allow audiences to hear an echo of Homer's voice, this play will be accompanied by a lyrical performance by Ilías Patrinós, a native Greek researcher in archaeomusicology and the founder of THIASEIA, an ancient Hellenic music revival group (see the video linked below).
