What will I learn in this stand-up comedy writing class?

You’ll learn how to turn your observations, opinions, stories, and everyday experiences into original stand-up material. Topics include joke structure, setups and punchlines, specificity, heightening, revision, comedic point of view, delivery, and organizing individual jokes into a cohesive set.

What is the class size?

Class size is capped at 10 students to keep the experience personal and comfortable.

Does the workshop include a live show?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The course concludes with an intimate graduation show for friends, family, and fellow comedy lovers.

What if I’m nervous about performing?

That is completely normal. You’ll have several weeks to practice in a small, supportive group before the intimate graduation show.

Is this primarily a writing class or a performance class?

This is primarily a stand-up comedy writing class. You’ll focus on developing ideas, writing jokes, revising material, and shaping individual pieces into a cohesive set. There will be a small performance component so you can practice delivering your material and prepare for the graduation show.

Do I need to bring jokes to the first class?

No. You can begin with everyday thoughts, stories, frustrations, or observations. The instructor will help you develop them into comedy material.

Will there be work between classes?

Yes. Students should expect to write and revise material between sessions so they can make the most of the workshop.

Are tickets refundable?

Tickets can be refunded up to 30 days before the 1st day of the workshop minus a $25 administrative fee. After that, tickets are non-refundable but you can transfer your spot to a friend — just let us know in advance by emailing hello@jerseycreativelab.com.
